Winter time in Hokkaido lasts for about 5 months from late November to March, and covered with snow. The outside temperature goes down minus degrees Celsius, however, the insides of the buildings are heated well. Snowfall is usually around 1 m.
There are two alumni well-known for their research achievement: Prof. Emer. Akira SUZUKI from Faculty of Engineering who received Nobel Medal in Chemistry in 2010, and Prof. Emer. Ukichiro NAKAYA from School of Science who created the world first artificial snowflakes in 1936.

Kanzo UCHIMURA: alumnus from the 2nd graduating class at SAC, Christian evangelist and the most well-known Japanese pre-WWII pacifist
Akira IFUKUBE: composer of classical music/film score who created all the soundtracks for the Godzilla films
Yuichiro MIURA: the oldest alpinist whose records to reach the summit of Mt. Everest in 2003, 2008 and 2013, and the first person to ski on Mt. Everest in 1970
Mamoru MOHRI: an ex-Assist. Prof. at Faculty of Engineering and the first astronaut with Japanese citizenship
There is a wide range of society and volunteer group at HU which enriches the student life: 64 sport societies such as swimming, basketball, ice skating, rugby and football, and 49 cultural ones as orchestra, art and photography.
There are also 18 societies for students, faculty members and staff in engineering as mountain climbing, photography and golf. Engineering fields are active to hold Sport Festival, Cultural Festival, Tug-of-War Tournament besides the own activities of societies.
