Between 21 and 27 August 2014, there were 38 students and scholars from USTB University of Science and Technology in Beijing and 2 students from NCHU National Chung Hsing University, Taiwan, visiting Hokkaido University. The delegates visited here as annually-held summer school participants.
This year’s summer school with USTB was held with huge cooperation of JST Japan Science and Technology Agency, and as one of the projects for JST’s SAKURA SCIENCE Exchange Programme in Science which invites superior Asian youths in science and technology, and lets them and the counterparts have productive exchange during their short-term stay in Japan.
During the first half of the programme, the summer school used Hokkaido University Sapporo campus to let the participants know about School/Graduate School of Engineering, and particularly their specialism, Materials Science and Engineering, through seminar and lab. and museum tour. Second half was focused on field trip to visit TOYOTA MOTOR HOKKAIDO, INC., Nippon Steel & Sumitomo Metal Corporation, and Japan Steel Works, Ltd. Muroran Plant, where they could see the latest robot technology, and manufacturing process of special steel and huge structures.
Not only the academic activities, the participants experienced also outdoor and cultural activities in Hokkaido, such as a tour to Hokkaido Shrine, Winter Sports Museum and Ski Jump Stadium, Japanese sword smith, Mt. Usu an active volcano, steam-filled Hell Valley by hot spring town, etc.
A part of the delegates had a chance of interviews with prospective supervisors to apply for postgraduate course(s) at HU.
